GOTH: Is it just a phase?

June 29th, 2009

I've been following the goth culture for about 2 years now, started in year 8, and I appear to be getting more and more engrossed in it but I'm wondering it it's just a phase or not 'cos I'm not sure.
I listen to a combination of '80's goth rock, modern goth rock, darkwave, ethereal, industrial, neoclassical, deathrock, punk, screamo, metal and futurepop/eurodance music along with some pop.
I'm into books by authors like Anne Rice, Bram Stoker, Neil Gaiman, J.K. Rowling, Melissa Marr, Mary Shelley, Lemony Snicket, Tolstoy and Edgar Allan Poe, etc.
I read comics mostly by James O'Barr, Neil Gaiman, Jhonen Vasquez and Slave Graphics Labor titles along with manga.
I don't watch much TV save for the old Addams Family, Invader Zim, random comedy shows and Charmed.
My favourite movies include The Crow, Austin Powers, Shrek, Dracula, Lost Boys, random horror/slasher films and anything by Tim Burton.
I haven't dyed my hair although I have it unevenly cut and wear lots of black and red (75% of my wardrobe is black), black shoes and a silver ankh.
I can also be rather introverted and a cynic who'd rather write + draw than hang out with others. None of my friends are goth either.
Does it sound like a phase or not? 'Cos I'm not sure. Some people tell me it is but I don't feel that way. I was always into dark things although cute stuff appeals to me too although I can't stand bright colours and I find myself constantly drawn to the goth aesthetics..

Goths are misfits who pride themselves on being misfits.
But don't feel offended, there are other misfit groups out there other than Goths.
Goths just have an odd pleasure in being on the dark side.
Goths tend to think of themselves as dark natured with a coolness about it. However, others regard Goths as dark natured, but nothing cool associated with it.
I think the outward apperances of Goths is a phase thing, however, as they grow up their darkness can stay within them without it being outwardly evident. I mean, can you imagine a 75 year old lady with black fingernail polish, black circles around her eyes, and a chain hanging from her ear to the corner of her mouth??? PULEEEZE!

A word of caution: be careful of Goth tendencies…there is a spiritual darkness to it that can be very dangerous to a person's mind and soul. I have seen this happen, and it usually results in trips to the shrink and meds…and worse things, in some cases.

Describe Your Music Evolution …?

June 29th, 2009

I think it's interesting how people generally evolve in their taste for certain genres, as new bands are introduced to us… we open up to new genres over time …

While I can say I still enjoy a pretty broad spectrum of rock genres now…here's how my progression came about…since the age of 11

Me:

Metal/glam metal — "Alternative"– industrial–electronica —goth –Trip hop (18-22)…more punk :P (18-30) = As a result I am now heavily into synth punk, electro punk, and all other hybrids :D

… I still enjoy everything else I mentioned

what's your music evolution equation ?
I also listen to loads of indie, too

I include psychobilly and rockabilly under punk rock appreciation for some reason
Well I'M NOT ashamed that I started out as a metalhead …pffft! :)
A lot people started out by the music collections of their older siblings … or family members…but I pretty much had to navigate my way through to some good music … not at all ashamed of my music evolution

Around eight I discovered music. I usually listened to those Top 40 pop hits that I really hate nowadays.

At nine or so, my tastes shifted to rock. I still listened to pop, but not as much. Mostly it was the emo and pop-punk stuff that I hate today too. I also got into alternative rock too.

That when on for two years or so. My tastes suddenly changed when I was twelve, and I began inhaling all these new genres, but also abandoned my previous rock and pop tastes. I began listening to some classic rock stuff, but to be more specific on the actual genre, hard rock.

Since then, I've been, like I said, taking in all these genres. During fall and winter, I listened to hard rock and some heavy metal. By spring, I was willing to listen to some British Invasion stuff and country rock (like the Eagles). And during the summer, I took on the blues, more bands from previous genres, folk and folk rock, alternative rock from the 80's and 90's including grunge, garage rock, progressive rock, funk, and punk rock. And maybe a couple other genres I'm forgetting.

Hip places or areas for ex-goths traveling to Montreal?

June 29th, 2009

My husband and I are going to be celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary at the beginning of August and are considering Montreal. We are in our mid 20's-ex goth/industrial kids with a taste for fine food, good beer/smoke and noise/dance music. We have only been to Montreal once a few years ago to see Coil and LOVED it. Any suggestions about places or areas to see, shop, eat, drink stay would be helpful, thanks!

St. Catherine St. is pretty rowdy, lots of bars and dance halls. Fine food you'll find in the old section. There are MANY good restaurants there. There are some very nice shops on Sherbrooke St. and there is the Underground City for shopping.

Free downloading help, please?

June 29th, 2009

Does anyone know where I can legally download some good goth, industrial and experimental music for free or almost for free?

limewire isn't legal…who told you that?

go buy the cd if you really liked the musician, music downloads of all kinds are illegal, unless if they actually let you download it, like the other person said on myspace. plus, your not helping your favourite musician…

What to get my boyfriend for Christmas [details inside]?

June 29th, 2009

He’s 20, he’s really into darkwave, techno and goth music. But I really don’t want to get him a CD, I’d like to get him something good. He dresses goth, all the goth fashion/fantasy stuff. I’m into the same stuff, but guys are so hard to shop for! Especially when he gives that “Oh, I don’t want anything” excuse. Any ideas?

give him love, that’s all they ask for.

Can you guys recommend some new and good music videos? Since it's so quiet in R&P today I figured I'd watch some videos. I prefer Industrial, Goth, and Alternative… but I'm open to any suggestions.

I listen to a lot of music. Much more than anyone i know and I'm finding it impossible to find bands i haven't already heard of and listened to.already.
i like industrial, electronic-punk, cyber-goth, and electro-pop music.
A couple of the bands I've been listening to lately include:
angelspit, mindless self indulgence, cell dweller, infeldel inc., breathe carolina, muse, etc. i tried to list bands that are more well-known.
If you're extremely in depth with music i could use your help.
Please dont mention bands that i'd obviously know.

Have you tried last.fm? It's great with recommending new music.

Coming Out?

June 28th, 2009

i am a gay 14 year old boy and i am trying to come out to my family. I already told my sister, she didn't care much. My mother would love me no matter what, but my dad and everyone on his side of the family are die-hard Catholics.I'm mostly afraid of how I will be treated by my family. I can't even think of my family's reaction either. I am not your average stereotype gay dude. I listen to industrial and goth music. I don't dance, I hate the rainbow(i like black), I dress in all black dress clothes and combat boots. So there are no signs of homosexuality on me. I like to wear corsets, stockings, and those ruffle pirate-like shirts but my family knows it's only because Im just another Marilyn Manson-influenced kid and by nature a freak. I don't want to change who I am to give signs. Can anyone help me out here? Preferably someone who can relate to this in any way or has had personal experience. Thanks
My family is mostly party and fun loving Puerto Ricans who would probably tease me mercilessly any chance they could.aAnd im not up for taking their shit. Though I do have a connection with my family, they are not bad people.
I also forgot to mention, my dad's a hard-ass cop who always makes fun of gay people.
Fuck you samantha and by the way I'm a guy you stupid bitch

well i'm bi and came out to my mother and sister. it is really hard and you have to be willing to let the tears hit the floor. your father might not act well but, to tell the truth, no father dose. your best bet is, break it to your mother first. talk to her about it. my mom still won't let me tell my father because he hates his gay brother but, for all the drugs and the scene. just tell your mother right now. if she is how you say, she will be your rock in all of this and no one will take her away from you.

note. she might cry, be prepared. and, good luck and be safe.

Are most goths Christians?

June 28th, 2009

It is apparent that the gothic clothing/music/style of today has been influenced by Christianity of the 14th-18th century. In goth music, you can sometimes hear the church choir in the background or something having to do with religious ceremonies. Goths are romanticizing those dark times by incorporating even lifestyles of those gothic times through physical apparel. Have you ever seen an industrial music video? You're bound to see some gothic architecture in the video (e.g. cathedral). I was listening to some gothic techno and heard them recite the Lord's prayer. So are the majority of goths Christian?
Do you agree if Christianity didn't exist, there would be no gothic culture?

I don't think that most goths are Christians, but many are. The most devout Catholic that I know is goth, and there are many websites such as Christian Goth (http://www.christiangoth.com/ ) and Gothic Christianity (http://www.gothicchristianity.com/ ) that cater to the Christian goth community. Being a part of the gothic subculture does not require any particular belief or faith system, so it is hard to tell how many goths are Christian. From my personal experience, there are many Christian goths out there, but there are also many atheist, agnostic, and pagan goths. An you're right, there is a genuine connection between goths and Christianity in terms of symbolism.
