Magicka was founded in 1998, out of Oslo’s rapidly growing and highly vital gothic and
industrial underbelly. The members came from several of the most important bands on
this black-clad stage: Vocalist Lene and bass-player Kat made out half of the original
setup of Cybele, a band which played gigs in Germany, as well as being poster-girls
in several English magazines. Programmer Stene has his roots with the electronic
veterans Industrial Heads, and guitarist Happy also plays with Eternal Joy, which has
two CD’s already under their belt. Tori joined the band later, with guitar and vocals.
One single song recorded on a CD was enough to get Magicka gigs in major Norwegian
cities like Oslo, Bergen, and Stavanger. The song also caught the attention of Tatra
Records, a label which has shown itself as a leading exponent and exporter of gloomful
Norwegian rock music, whether it be the black metal of much acclaimed Satyricon
(which is signed on Tatra’s sub-label Moonfog), or the electronica of Apoptygma
Berzerk. Both these bands are icons for massive underground audiences in both Europe
and the USA.
Magicka creates their dark and beautiful soundscapes mixing eighties gothic rock with
industrial techno sounds from the nineties. Influences are said to be bands like
Sisters of Mercy, Nine Inch Nails, Bel Canto and Massive Attack. Magicka say they derive
their inspiration and artistic nourishment from: “Life, death, hate, love, sex and cartoons”.
Captivating moods and heavy yet highly danceable beats makes Magicka a dramatic live
act, with siren Lene as an enchanting front figurine.
The debut EP An Awakening is published by Tatra in November 2000. Besides the title track,
it also features the song Sinking (previously released in a different version on the compilation
Sex.:.Goth.:.Electronics). Other songs featured will be Time is Frozen, the original version
of Autoicon, and also five remixes by more or less known bands from Oslo’s electronic scene
(Industrial Heads, Oceania Indigo, Skin Disease and Order of The Solar Temple).
More of Magicka’s music became available in November 2000, this time on a compilation CD
published by Music Network Scandinavia (MNV), and dedicated to the black-clad
cartoon-heroine Nemi, known from one of Norway’s best selling tabloids; Dagbladet. Nemi’s
creator Lise specifically wanted the song Lullaby For A Little Vampire for this CD, after the
band’s appearance at the release party for her cartoon album.
Magicka is currently on hiatus, with band members scattered all over the world.
