If Marilyn Manson isnt goth what is he?
I know he is not a goth (lol), but I want to know what you would classify his music/image as.
The closest thing I can think of is Industrial

I agree with Vampire Aritocrat. He is definitely 1 of a kind & I happen to like his music. His videos are weird as hell, but I respect that he’s willing to do damn near anything in order to entertain a crowd(although the incident where he dryhumped a guy’s head was a little much imo).

Marilyn Manson is a stage act-a character he plays. The man and the act are not the same person. And whether you like him or not, he has been successful playing this character. I was impressed with him when I heard him interviewed-he had a lot of good things to say. His image-controversial. And by the way, this is coming from a 50 year old woman.

He is generalised as goth with a bit of industrial thrown in, also sometimes known as shock rock, but its very hard to categorize his music due to the fact that every album has a unique sound and differs from the previous. Myself, I class him as goth rock, there should be no metal label on him at all, he actually has an element of ind. groove/dance in a lot of his tracks as well. An example of a classic gothic band is Type O Negative.

Well, as we all should know by now, Marilyn Manson is not goth, rather, "shock-rock". Unlike goth rock, shock rock is an umbrella term used to describe music that shocks the listeners through lyrics and demeanor.
Which is why Marilyn Manson is the primary music choice of Mansonites and mall goths: individuals who only want to be part of the scene to shock and scare their parents and all who surround them.
While I’m not a listener, I have heard the Marilyn Manson does have a unique sound – and that he is far from a bad artist – so it is hard to pinpoint is exact genre, so the umbrella term is the closest one can get.

Most people who don’t classify his music as Goth or Gothic rock would say that his earlier music has some industrial inspirations. But for the most part, he is considered Nu-Metal and shock rock.
